Google Punishes Itself After SERP Terms Violation - Google's Positive Response

Written By Lingkar Dunia on Friday, January 6, 2012 | 7:56 AM

Google has takes a positive step after getting various criticisms on internet over violation of its own Search Engine Ranking Position (SERP) Terms and Conditions to gain more popularity and ranking on its own Search Engine "Google" for one of its own product Google Chrome. According to the story unveiled from SEOBook about "Pay Per Post (PPP) Campaign" tactics from Google to market Google Chrome on various low end profile Blogs.

Now Google has punishes itself by demoting its own ranking on search engine results. For the next 60 days users won't be able to see any kind of ads for Chrome when searching for keyword 'browser' on Google.com. This step has been taken from Google for its paid ads campaign; Google had been paying various bloggers to create what would be considered 'low quality content' against the company's terms of service. By paying bloggers to post hyperlinks to the Chrome download page, Google was able to drive itself to a higher position in its own search results. The only problem was that this violated its own terms of service for Paid Links.

Before browser SERP:
After browser SERP:

The issue was first highlighted by one of SEOBook author in which he mentioned that how come a keyword for This post is sponsored by Google brings back over 400 search pages on Google, but now Google has taken a serious and major step by demoting and removing all search results of itself and various other website which were involved in that "Pay Per Post" (PPP) campaign. Google have also dropped the PageRank value of the website http://www.google.com/chrome contain 9 (PR), remembered reducing the PageRank value is not the same as removing or banning the page from Google Search. however, a lower PageRank value will reduce its chances to get higher rank for certain keywords, not only this Google have also dropped the ranking position of the webpage from top to lower grade, previously http://www.google.com/chrome was ranking on top 10 search results but now you have to go to the fifth page of results to find it, ranked in position 55 and sometime we have also seen the page lower to as low at 93.

According to Google's official statement to Search Engine Land;
Weve investigated and are taking manual action to demote www.google.com/chrome and lower the sites PageRank for a period of at least 60 days.
We strive to enforce Googles webmaster guidelines consistently in order to provide better search results for users.
While Google did not authorize this campaign, and we can find no remaining violations of our webmaster guidelines, we believe Google should be held to a higher standard, so we have taken stricter action than we would against a typical site.
I think its really a good and positive step from Google and its team to defend itself and to clean Search Engine from all these kind of approaches and campaign in near future and it will helps Google to maintain its reputation and to become and remain number one Search Engine of Internet for decades.

Reason Behind New Changes in Google Products Interface and Design

Written By Lingkar Dunia on Friday, July 1, 2011 | 12:49 PM

Google is customizing more of its products after the change in design and interface of Google Search, Google has already made an announcement in its previous official blog post and we had already review and discussed about the change in design and interfaces of various Google Products and Websites in our previous post. Now Google has decided to change the look and interface of its E-mail service called 'Gmail'. Soon you will be able to feel the change in interface of Gmail service and other related websites of Gmail. The new changes has made from Google after the announcement of Google's Social Networking website known as 'Google+'. These changes are all part of that particular website.

What's new in Google's new Interface?

Google's Search:

The most popular and most used Search Engine in the world Google Search interface has changed and got a new look. Google has changed the interface here greatly by introducing a new, less colorful color scheme around the Search interface. Link colors remain largely unchanged; however the sidebar has received a nice shade of black with red/orange highlights to go with. The search bar has received a grey backing and the overall top bar has been changed from white to black.

Google's Gmail:

Google has now introduced new Gmail theme and interface but you have to choose that new theme by yourself. You won't be able to see that new theme automatically. You actually have to change your theme; we recommend the use of the Dense theme as it saves space. Again, the issue of scrolling seems apparent with the new Gmail theme, as generally interface items are more spaced (especially lists). You fit fewer items on the screen and it appears as though buttons are optimized for touchscreen rather than a keyboard and mouse.

Google's Map:

Google also updated the new design and interface of its most popular product 'Google Maps'. The new interface feels more modern and refreshed, and Google has added the handy feature of My Places, which lists all places you have saved and rated for easy re-access in case you feel like visiting the same place again. There have been no changes to the actual maps part of Google Maps, so itll feel familiar in that respect.

Soon users will notice more and more new changes in Google's websites and products. So you have to get prepare for the new interface developed by the Google. Google is also encouraging users to give feedback on their new designs, and that can be provided here.

Google, Yahoo and Bing collaborate to form Schema.org

Written By Lingkar Dunia on Sunday, June 5, 2011 | 4:56 AM

The three big internet companies and competitors of all time, Google, Yahoo and Bing have team up to create a unified project called Schema.org. Today its really rare to see three big rivals collaborate on a single project. The collaboration is a positive sign that even though Google and Bing are fighting for market share, they are able to put aside differences to help out the average consumer. Schema is a website which is all about how web developers and owners have to work on their website to gain more online identity on internet and on Search Engines.

Schema.org is a new website aimed to help website owners and developers with using a common set of schemas. This new initiative is "aimed at creating and supporting a common set of schemas for structured data markup on Web pages." The search giants worked together to create a one-stop shop for website owners and developers.

According to Microsoft:
Schema.org will become a one-stop shop for site owners and developers, providing the tips and tools necessary to help improve how their sites appear in search results on Bing, Google and Yahoo! It will also help search engines better understand websites, and moving forward, Bing will work jointly with the larger Web community and its search partners to extend the available schema categories. Consumers will also benefit from this effort by experiencing richer search experiences and content from a much broader set of publishers.

While this new initiative is definitely for the technical user, it should help to create a more unified playing field now that Google, Bing, and Yahoo are all onboard. The goal is to help site owners and developers improve how their sites appear in search results.

Google Redesign Search Engine Reuslts Page - Experimenting & Testing

Written By Lingkar Dunia on Saturday, May 7, 2011 | 6:19 AM

Google always experiment a new things and tests for its product and now Google has just started to redesign its Search Engine Results page. One of our valuable readers has just accidently got this image and news from relevant sources that Google is redesigning its whole Search Result Page and making changes to its current design with a new color scheme and a lot more white space.

One of the Google Representatives also confirmed this news and said that Google is working and conducting one of its user tests. The newly design results page incorporates a tweaked color scheme. The greens, purples and blues are not as harsh as the current set of colors used on Google.com.

The bigger changes focus on separating and spacing out individual search results. There is simply a lot more white space around each search result and each link. Also, each search result is divided by a dashed line.

The new changes are rather dramatic for a search engine used by millions of people daily. Google is gathering data on how people react to the new changes. Those numbers will determine whether or not these changes will move out of testing and become permanent.

Enter Into Microsoft Speller Challenge & Win $10K

Written By Lingkar Dunia on Wednesday, January 19, 2011 | 10:16 PM

Microsoft have started a new competition between users knows as "Speller Challenge". In this competition people have to correct incorrect spelling of Bing Search Engine for better search results and the top five winners can win upto a prize of $10,000.
Bing feels that there is a lot of room for improvement in this area of their search engine as they are teaming up with Microsoft Research to offer a reward to the team that develops the best spelling alteration technique. They are calling it the Speller Challenge and goal is to "develop a spelling alteration system suitable for large-scale statistical data mining-based web search."

A common approach to spelling alteration is the noisy channel model, in which the received query (q) is treated as a noise-corrupted version of the target query (c). In this model, the spelling alteration system alters q into c and returns the latter's results. The techniques to best identify query/target pairs and best estimate these statistics are the active research problem that underlies this challenge. But that's just the foundation. Place the spelling alteration task in the context of web search, and you have another dimension to consider. The effectiveness of using a fixed lexicon is a known problem because it can lead the speller not only to miss "real word" errors but also misrecognize out-of-vocabulary tokens as errors.

If this challenge sounds like something up your alley Microsoft is offering a sample dataset for developers and researchers to use, a similar dataset will be used to test the effectiveness of the spelling alteration engine. There will be five winners with the first prize winner getting $10,000.

Bing To Integrate Facebook Features in Search Engine Soon

Written By Lingkar Dunia on Thursday, October 14, 2010 | 10:52 AM

You may start seeing some familiar faces in Bing search results soon.

Microsoft deepened its corporate friendship with Facebook Wednesday, announcing tighter integration with the social network into Bing's search results.

Bing will display data from Facebook, such as user profiles and pages your friends have "Liked," to complement Web searches.
For example, if you search Bing for Mark Zuckerberg, Facebook's 26-year-old chief executive, you might find a link to his personal profile, with buttons for sending him a message or adding him as a friend. That's in addition to the standard links to Wikipedia articles and news stories.

A link on that same results page to the website for "The Social Network" could show pictures of your friends who have inidicated on Facebook that they "Like" that movie.

The new Bing features will also show up in searches made from Facebook's website.

Microsoft's Yusuf Mehdi was unambiguous about his excitement for the Facebook partnership.
"This is going to profoundly change how we search," Mehdi, the company's senior vice president for its online audience business, said at the news conference.

Last week Yahoo added new features to its search results pages, which are powered by Bing. In addition to slideshow enhancements and a new shortcuts feature, Yahoo began pulling in some photo albums from Facebook.

Despite advancements by rival search engines, market leader Google continues to gain.

Google was used for 66 percent of internet searches in September, according to market research firm comScore. During that period Yahoo had 17 percent and Bing had 11 percent, the report said.

But Google has struggled to form partnerships with Facebook. The search giant says it wants to tap into the social network's 500 million users.

Chrome 7 Vs. Internet Explorer 9

Written By Lingkar Dunia on Friday, September 24, 2010 | 9:41 PM

Unless youve been living under a rock then you may have heard that Microsoft recently released a public beta version of Internet Explorer 9. Microsoft officials showed off some impressive stats against their competitors, claiming the first and only browser to deliver full hardware acceleration of all HTML5 content. Being first is great but is being second more important?

Microsofts bold claims are accurate but one has to remember the product is still in beta. Google on the other hand has a remarkable way of dishing out product updates with lightning speed. The web search giant is currently readying Chrome 7 which it claims will be 60 times faster than Chrome 6. 2D graphics performance and canvas acceleration is now available in trunk and canary builds of Chrome 7. This system picks the best graphics API to use on each OS that Chromium supports: Windows XP/Vista/7, Mac OS and Linux, wrote James Robinson, Software Engineer at Google.

During our early tests at Neowin using Microsofts Internet Explorer test drive site, IE9 still wins in canvas speed demos but Chrome 7 is greatly improved over previous versions. Its important to remember that Chrome 7 is still in the very early beta stage so this could change significantly before its fully released. Google isnt the only other browser looking at hardware acceleration. The latest beta builds of Mozillas Firefox also include hardware accelerated components for improved performance. Its not yet clear when Chrome 7 will be available in non-dev form but Robinson says its coming. With Google Chromes fast release cycles, we expect to be able to get these enhancements to users quickly and add new performance improvements over time.

Google has also created a series of demos, ranging from an aquarium to 3D walls of photos. The demos show what is possible with the 2D accelerated APIs.

Texas to Investigate Google Search Rankings

Written By Lingkar Dunia on Saturday, September 4, 2010 | 4:36 AM

A spokesman for Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott confirmed the investigation, but declined further comment.

The review appears to be focused on whether Google is manipulating its search results to stifle competition.

The pecking order of those results can make or break websites because Google's search engine processes about two-thirds of the search requests in the U.S. and handles even more volume in some parts of the world.

That dominance means a website ranking high on the first page of Google's results will likely attract more traffic and generate more revenue, either from ads or merchandise sales.

On the flip side, being buried in the back pages of the results, or even at the bottom of the first page, can be financially devastating and, in extreme cases, has been blamed for ruining some Internet companies.

European regulators already have been investigating complaints alleging that Google has been favoring its own services in its results instead of rival websites.

Several lawsuits filed in the U.S. also have alleged Google's search formula is biased. Google believes Abbott is the first state attorney general to open an antitrust review into the issue.

"We look forward to answering (Abbott's) questions because we're confident that Google operates in the best interests of our users," Don Harrison, Google's deputy general counsel, wrote in a Friday blog post.

Harrison said that Abbott has asked Google for information about several companies, including: Foundem, an online shopping comparison site in Britain; SourceTool, which runs an e-commerce site catering to businesses; and MyTriggers, another shopping comparison site.

All of those companies offer features that Google includes in its search engine or in other parts of its website. Foundem, SourceTool and MyTriggers have previously filed lawsuits or regulatory complaints against Google.

"Given that not every website can be at the top of the results, or even appear on the first page of our results, it's unsurprising that some less relevant, lower quality websites will be unhappy with their ranking," Harrison wrote.

Google says its closely guarded search formula strives to recommend websites that are most likely to satisfy the needs of each user's request. If it didn't keep its users happy, Google argues that people would become disgruntled and switch to other search engines offered by Yahoo Inc., Microsoft Corp. and IAC/InterActiveCorp's Ask.com.

China to Setup New Search Engine

Written By Lingkar Dunia on Saturday, August 14, 2010 | 2:31 AM

Yes you have listened it correct. Now China is going to launch its own Search Engine to compete with Google in search engine market. China Mobile, the world's largest mobile phone company, has signed a framework agreement with the nation's official Xinhua news agency to set up a search engine. After Google closed its search engine in China this is somehow expecting by many experts.

The deal comes as US Internet giant Google surrenders share of the world's biggest online market to its Chinese rival Baidu, following a battle with Beijing over censorship and cyber attacks that Google says originated in China.

Xinhua announced the deal in a brief statement and a spokeswoman for Hong Kong-listed China Mobile confirmed its parent company had signed the agreement.

Shares in China Mobile, which had 554 million subscribers at the end of June, ended up 2.5 percent at 84.15 Hong Kong dollars (10.8 dollars) on the news, reversing earlier losses.

Google's share of the world's biggest online market fell to 24.2 percent in the three months to June, from 30.9 percent in the first quarter, research firm Analysis International said last month.

At the same time, Baidu increased its dominance with its market share rising to 70 percent in the second quarter from 64 percent in the first three months of the year.

China's search market was worth 2.67 billion Yuan (394 million dollars) in the second quarter, up 48 percent year on year.

The number of web users in China now stands at around 420 million, according to official figures released last month.

In March, Google said it would no longer bow to government censors and effectively shut down its Chinese search engine, automatically re-routing mainland users to its uncensored site in Hong Kong.
