Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 Smartphone Review - Hardware & Software Details

Written By Lingkar Dunia on Monday, June 13, 2011 | 7:31 AM

Samsung is now become the most promising company in term of Smartphone's and Tablet computing development. Samsung has recently launched its new family member of its Samsung Galaxy Tab known as Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 device with lots of powerful features. The Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1, in its current form, was born out of a response to Apple's sleek and thin iPad tablet. The original Galaxy Tab 10.1, which hadn't reached market yet, just couldn't compete, so Samsung went back the drawing board and turned out this beauty of a tablet in record time. And this one can compete.

The original 7-inch Samsung Galaxy Tab was the only major iPad competitor to be released in 2010, but it was hampered by the inclusion of Android 2.2 very much an OS designed for mobile phones rather than tablets. However with the release of the tablet-tastic Android 3.1 this year, the iPad 2 is about to come up against some serious competition.
Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 features a large, wide-screen display that looks sharp and bright, and it rests inside a body that is incredibly thin and light. This 10-inch tablet weighs less than a number of smaller tablets on the market, yet it still packs a dual-core 1GHz processor and the latest version of Android 3.1 Honeycomb.

There still aren't very many tablet-specific Android apps, and those that exist are not that easy to find in the Android Market, but the Galaxy Tab 10.1 is still a desirable piece of kit.

Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 is the same as the device launched at Google I/O, but there's two key differences that we'll focus on here: the hardware and design, and the thoroughly different Software Version (v3.1 here versus v3.0 before).

Hardware and Design:

As is the case with all 10-inch tablets, Samsung's Galaxy Tab 10.1 is a large device. Its face measures 256.6mm x 172.9mm (10.1in x 6.8in), but the entire tablet is only 8.6mm (.3in) thick. Pair that with a low 565g (19.9oz) weight and you have a device that is much easier to wield than one might expect.

On top of that, the Tab's build quality is really good. The glossy back, which is white and silver on our unit, feels good on the finger tips, and all of the parts fit tightly together. The Tab also feels very strong in spite of its low profile design. There are no buttons to be found on the front of the Galaxy Tab 10.1, only the 10.1-inch, 1280 x 800 pixel displays and the forward-facing 2 megapixel camera. When held horizontally, the volume and power controls are found on the left end of the top edge of the tablet, while the 3.5mm headphone jack is a bit over to the right. A stereo speaker port can be found on the left and right edges, one each, and the proprietary charging/data port can be found on the bottom edge.

The interior is home to an NVIDIA Tegra 2 dual-core 1GHz processor and 16GB (or 32GB) of internal storage. I was testing the Wi-Fi only model, but 3G-capable models are expected soon.

Software:

The primary differentiator between the Tab 10.1 LE and the far-less-limited Tab 10.1: 0.1. Android 3.1 brings along widgets that can be resized vertically and horizontally, access to the newfangled Movies section of the Android Market, improved overall performance and support for a host of USB accessories. Unfortunately, the Movies department is only open for Android 3.1 tablets with 3G radios, hence, our 16GB WiFi test unit still showed it as unavailable.

The performance improvements, however, are here. They're subtle, sure, but you won't find us kvetching about extra speed, regardless of how minor it is. Granted, we didn't have any real qualms with performance on the Tab 10.1 Limited Edition, but it's safe to say we've even fewer qualms here. Resizing widgets worked, and worked well, but it's mildly annoying that it only supports a smattering of 'em right now -- we're hoping to see more apps updated soon to take advantage, and when that happens, homepane tweakers will no doubt find these remarkably useful. It enables each pane to be full of useful, glanceable information, a sizable calendar prevents you from having to load the app each time.

We'd also like to point out a huge, huge issue with using the Galaxy Tab 10.1 in conjunction with OS X. For whatever reason, Android File Transfer still hasn't been updated to support this slate, which means that you cannot (easily) use your Mac to transfer files onto your device. We have to wonder what Google was thinking when it fundamentally changed how Macs could interface with Android; our Nexus One (Android 2.3) simply pops up as an external drive on the desktop of a MacBook Pro, while Honeycomb devices require a dedicated piece of software that may or may not work. Blech. We're hoping Google updates AFT in the hours ahead; otherwise, you can expect the forums to come alive as Mac owners struggle to make contact with the $500+ slate they just bit on.

Samsung Installing Keylogging Software In Laptops

Written By Lingkar Dunia on Thursday, March 31, 2011 | 3:40 AM

Network World unveiled that Samsung has been installing a key logging software on its laptop and desktop computers. One guy who has just recently bought a brand new Samsung laptop has been discovered an application called StartLogger on his laptop. He said that the software was installed in C:\ drive and it was recording every keystroke, including emails, documents, usernames and passwords.

He reached to Samsung Support Center and told them about the software and reports this to Samsung Support and logged incident number 2101163379 with them. Samsung's support Center denied the existence of any such software on its laptops.
After being informed of two different models which had been tested for the keylogger, Samsung changed its tune and, instead, blamed Microsoft by saying "all Samsung did was to manufacture the hardware." This answer was not accepted by Mohamed and he told them that it "did not make sense", the incident was then moved higher up the support chain to a supervisor, who explained to Hassan that he was "not sure how this software ended up in the new laptop," but confirmed that "yes, Samsung did knowingly put this software on the laptop to monitor the performance of the machine and to find out how it is being used."

In 2007 the FTC Chairman, Deborah Platt Majoras, said "Installations of secret software that create security risks are intrusive and unlawful." If this story turns out anything like the Sony rootkit fiasco we may see lawsuits, and quite a few of them.

The two models currently known to contain this software are the R525 and R540. CNET has published a helpful guide on how to remove this software, to read it click here.

Download and Install Android Gingerbread 2.3.3 Update Manually from Google

Written By Lingkar Dunia on Friday, February 25, 2011 | 7:47 AM

Many Google Nexus S and Nexus One Smartphone users wants to update their software with latest release Android 2.3.3. Now Android users can download and install update manually of Android 2.3.3. Reports from Google suggested users could be waiting as long as a matter of weeks for the over-the-air update to land on everyone's handsets, but now the search giant has decided to allow eager punters to download the update and apply it manually.

If you want to be a lucky user to hold latest Android update of 2.3.3, here's how you can get the latest version of everyone's favorite mobile OS without waiting.

NOTE: We're hearing reports of the Nexus S update not working - it seems Google may have given us the incorrect update file. Hopefully the issue will be corrected ASAP!
  1. Download the relevant update for your device: Nexus S and Nexus One.
  2. Rename the downloaded Zip file to 'update.zip' - Nexus One owners MUST do this, while interestingly the Nexus S can flash from any file name.
  3. Copy the renamed file to your phone's storage.
  4. Turn your phone off. Now turn it back on while holding the volume DOWN (Nexus One) or volume UP (Nexus S) button.
  5. Press the volume DOWN button to highlight 'recovery' and press the power button to select it.
  6. Next you should see a yellow triangle with an exclamation mark - press the volume UP and power buttons simultaneously.
  7. This last step depends on your phone - Nexus One users: use the trackball to select 'apply sdcard:update.zip. Nexus S - Choose 'apply update from /sdcard and choose the update file.
After the above steps and a restart you should now be running Android 2.3.3. Welcome to Gingerbread, Nexus One owners!

Update: As pointed out in the comments, it appears Google hasn't so much released the update files as someone's managed to get hold of them. Either way the end result is the same, but it's still worth remembering that this isn't strictly 100% official!

Samsung I8700 Omnia 7 Smartphone Review

Written By Lingkar Dunia on Sunday, October 24, 2010 | 8:57 AM

After the huge success of Samsung Galaxy Tab P1000, Samsung is again introducing its yet another Windows Phone 7 based Smartphone Samsung I8700 Omnia 7, Which experts think is Samsung one of the finest made Smartphone ever.

With the Galaxy smart phone doing great business and the Galaxy Tab tablet out later this year, Samsung's invasion of the touch screen market is well and truly underway. But it's not only the Android operating system that's tickling the South Korean tech giant's toes; the Omnia 7 GT-i8700 is the company's first handset to run Microsoft's shiny new Windows Phone 7 operating system.
Blockhead
The Omnia 7 sports a pleasing square design. The edges are rounded, though, so the phone won't slice through any major arteries as it sits in your pocket. It feels quite large, but that's to be expected with the 4-inch Super AMOLED touchscreen this bad boy boasts. Samsung has done a good job of bringing the edge of the screen right up to the edge of the device, so there's no wasted space.

The phone feels pleasingly light. While that's often a sign of compromised build quality, it doesn't seem to be the case with the Omnia 7.

Super screen
That display has a resolution of 800x480 pixels, and it's rather spiffy. Super AMOLED displays are always divisive -- some people think they look too garish and bright. That's something you'll have to make up your own mind about.

One of the Omnia 7's most interesting features is a 1GHz Qualcomm QSD8250 processor. It should give the phone plenty of speed, and, indeed, we noticed the Windows Phone 7 interface moving extremely swiftly and fluidly. This processor will also come in handy when playing games, for example.

Around the back, you'll find a 5-megapixel camera, which, as well as handling your snaps, is capable of shooting 720p video footage. These kinds of specs are par for the course when it comes to high-end smart phones these days.

Outlook
The Windows Phone 7 operating system looks really cool, and the Samsung Omnia 7 GT-i8700 looks like a tasty piece of kit. If we have any early complaints, it's that there doesn't seem to be much that distinguishes the Omnia 7 from the rest of the pack.

Samsung Galaxy Tab P1000 Review

Written By Lingkar Dunia on Saturday, September 18, 2010 | 12:33 PM

After the Success of Samsung Wave S8500 Samsung yet again come back with their brand new Smartphone the Samsung Galaxy Tab. This smartphone will be available soon in the United States through all four major wireless carriers. The Apple iPad has already sold millions and has a significant head start on tablet competitors like the Galaxy Tab, but the Galaxy Tab has a variety of compelling features and functions that could sway the decision between the two.

Lets review the Samsung Galaxy Tab with Seven Major Points of its success.

1. Size. The Samsung Galaxy Tab has a 7-inch display. The display is smaller than the iPad's 9.7 inches, but is still large enough to be functional and differentiate it from simply being a large smartphone (like the Dell Streak).

2. Weight. At just over 13 ounces, the Galaxy Tab is about half the weight of the iPad. When holding it one-handed for extended periods of time, the Galaxy Tab will be less strenuous and more comfortable than the one and a half pound iPad.

3. SD Memory Card. The Galaxy Tab only comes in 16Gb and 32Gb models, compared with the iPad's 16Gb, 32Gb, and 64Gb models, but it has an SD memory card slot that can add an additional 32Gb of storage and bring it up to 64Gb. The memory card option also adds versatility and endless storage because it can be swapped out and provides a means of transferring data between the Galaxy Tab and other devices.

4. Cameras. While few will adopt the Galaxy Tab as their portable camera of choice, having the option to snap photos is a plus. More importantly, having a front-facing camera and video chat and Web conferencing capabilities is a benefit from a business perspective. There is a reason that cameras were one of the most speculated features before the iPad launched without them, and why they are the most rumored feature of the upcoming next-generation iPad.

5. Flash. Apple has recently softened its position slightly on Flash, but there is still no direct Flash Player compatibility within the iPad. For those who feel Flash is an important element of the Web surfing experience, the Galaxy Tab is the way to go.

6. RAM. The Galaxy Tab has 512Mb of RAM--twice as much as the Apple iPad. More RAM means more apps can be actively run in memory without bogging the system down.

7. Multitasking. Android has true multitasking. Currently, the iPad has no multitasking other than the core apps like the iPod player that Apple chose to allow to run in the background. When the iPad gets iOS 4.2 in November, it will get the iOS 4 multitasking, but that is still a limited pseudo-multitasking that isn't as robust as what the Galaxy Tab has to offer.

Samsung world's biggest technology company

Written By Lingkar Dunia on Friday, January 29, 2010 | 7:54 AM

Samsung Logo HP Drops to Second Place

Samsung has becomes the world's biggest technology company, after 2009 sales of its devices hit $117.8 billion.

HP, who was formally number one in the technology sector, managed an impressive but not good enough $114.6 billion for the year, some three billion less than Samsung.

A major drive in the TV market, camera market and memory chips have shot Samsung up the technology charts. It was obvious by its massive presence at CES 2010 that the company was destined to reach the top spot at some point this year.

Gap in profits

The only sector where Samsung seems to have dropped the ball money-wise is in the mobile phone market.

Although its releasing a multitude of phones on to the market, Jae Lee, of Daiwa Securities, feels this is a place the company could strengthen, telling CNN: "Compare it with Apple. There is still a gap in profit margins of their phone businesses."
